Ride a Train Go Amtrak

This past summer my family and I took a train trip on Amtrak from Charlotte NC to Washington DC. This was our first train trip but we plan to do more. We really enjoyed it and it was a great alternative to driving or flying. In fact Mr. Obama will be taking a train from Chicago to Washington to DC to attend his inauguration. Trains are the new Green way travel as well as being cool and fun.
We booked the business class which is a little more but well worth it. In business you get larger, wider seats, drinks served and there is a electric socket for your laptop. There is no Internet access but hopefully there will be one day. We also were able to get the seats that face each other for 4 people to talk or play games on the table in between. A very nice feature but you have to get there early to get one of the two set up that way.
Some of the larger long haul trains have full dinning cars and sleeper cars. The train we rode only had a cafe car but that is still nice. The kids got hot dogs and played games on the tables in the cafe car.
The trip up went well, we were about 30 minutes late which is good on a train. However coming back a freight train broke down in front of us and we ended up about 3-4 hours late but that is somewhat unusual.
Overall we enjoyed the train and will go again soon Please leave comments that you have had riding a train.

amtrak is the best i have traveled many places on amtrack from dc including boston NY Canada and baltimore

I took my two kids on a trip from Colorado to Los Angeles a few years back on Amtrak. It was a 24 hour trip and we stayed in those little rooms with seats that convert into beds. It was a little bumpy at night but it really wasn't that bad. We also had a portable dvd player so the kids stayed occupied. I think going on a trip with other adults would have easier because you could eat in the diner cars and have a few drinks at the bar ect. While with my kids they delivered our meals to our room. All and all it was a pretty enjoyable experience. Good hub.
